Talk: Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) by Courtnay Butterworth
Earthwise Community Association
13:30 – 14:30
Please come and join us for this talk on the Polyphagus shot hole borer.  This talk is co-hosted by Subiaco Women's Shed and Earthwise at The Earthwise Community Center, Bagot Road - Subiaco. Since 2021, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has been responding to the polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), an invasive beetle that damages trees by tunnelling into trunks and branches and spreading a fungus, which can lead to tree death. This tiny pest poses a threat to Perth’s urban canopy, nature areas, and horticultural industries. In this session, Courtney Butterworth, Deputy Public Information Manager for WA’s largest biosecurity response, will provide an overview of PSHB biology, known host tree species, and how to spot key signs and symptoms of infestation. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A, offering the opportunity to ask questions and learn how you can help protect Western Australia’s trees. Courtney has been working on the Polyphagous shot-hole borer response since May 2024, initially as a Field Surveillance Officer (inspecting trees, sampling and trapping), then as a Stakeholder and Community Engagement Officer in the PSHB Public Information team from December 2024 and has been Deputy Manager Public Information since March this year. With a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Leeds, Courtney brings a strong scientific background, a lifelong passion for conserving our natural environment and a love for the outreach aspects of her work. Earthwise serves a community lunch for $5 a head, on first come first served basis from 12:30 Please register for your FREE TALK ticket (lunch is on 1st come 1st served basis) Door open for talk  13:15, Talk 13:30; Tea/Coffee will be served.
